Programme

Day 1

We will be welcomed at the scattered hotel where you’ll be briefed on the Carnival by the tour leader. This amazing event, one of the oldest in the Alps, is characterized by wooded masks.
We will have an aperitif in a brewery and then experience a typical dinner in Sauris.

Day 2

We will visit the Sauris Ham Factory and a small cheese factory, during the visit you will taste local products. We will then meet Dario and his nice family at their laboratory, and we will assist in the creation of wooden masks in an artistic workshop and learn the history behind the Sauro Carnival.
In the afternoon we will meet Paola for our cooking lesson at her house. We will prepare a traditional meal and enjoy our dinner together.

Day 3

We will visit the Galleria Tiepolo in Udine with over 700 masterpieces by Giovan Battista Tiepolo. Tiepolo is one of the greatest artist of 18th century and we will have the chance to admire the staircase of honor and the Fall of the Rebellious Angels fresco: an art work that remind the Baroque illusionism perspective.
We will then move on to Cividale del Friuli, one of the most mysterious cities in the region. Here, after crossing the bridge over the Natisone river, we will enter the heart of the city. We will enjoy a traditional lunch and visit the Temple and its   Santa Maria in Valle Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized as one of the places of power of the Longobard civilization.
We will have the rest of the afternoon free.

Day 4

We will have free time waiting for the night parade: we will walk in the forest with the light of lanterns together with the Rölar and the Keirar: the main characters of the Carnival.
The Rölar, named for the bells that he carries around his waist,  is a noisy character who warns the local community when it’s  time to celebrate the Carnival.
The Kheirar, characterized by torn clothes and a broom, is considered the King of Carnival.
